The Flick is a Pulitzer Prize–winning play set in a run-down movie theater in Worcester County, Massachusetts. The story follows three underpaid employees — Sam, Avery, and Rose — who work as ushers at the theater, sweeping popcorn and cleaning between film screenings. Much of the play unfolds through long, quiet conversations as they talk about movies, race, loneliness, ambition, and their uncertain futures.
Avery, a young film enthusiast, struggles to fit in with his coworker Sam, who develops feelings for Rose. As workplace tensions grow and the theater transitions from 35mm film to digital projection, the characters confront personal disappointments and unspoken conflicts. The play focuses on small, everyday moments rather than dramatic events, exploring themes of friendship, isolation, change, and the fear of being left behind.
