This Is Our Youth by Kenneth Lonergan is a coming-of-age play set in 1982 on Manhattan’s Upper West Side that follows three privileged but emotionally lost young adults over the course of a weekend. After stealing thousands of dollars from his abusive father, 19-year-old Warren hides out in the apartment of his friend Dennis, a charismatic but manipulative small-time drug dealer. As they attempt to impress Jessica, a fashion student Warren has feelings for, their conversations reveal insecurity, immaturity, and confusion about adulthood. Tensions rise as Warren struggles with guilt and independence while Dennis exerts control over him, ultimately forcing the characters to confront the consequences of their actions and the reality that growing up requires responsibility they are not yet ready to accept.
