The play is set in the home of George, a weary history professor, and Martha, the volatile daughter of the college president. They return home late after a faculty party, and Martha informs George that she has invited a young couple—Nick, a new biology professor, and his wife Honey—over for drinks.

As the night progresses, the evening turns into a psychological battlefield. George and Martha engage in cruel verbal games and expose each other’s failures, using Nick and Honey as pawns in their toxic dynamic. The younger couple, who initially appear more stable, are slowly drawn into the dysfunction and reveal their own insecurities and secrets—Nick’s ambition and Honey’s fear of pregnancy.

The emotional climax comes with the revelation that George and Martha have invented a fictional son, a psychological coping mechanism for their childlessness. George “kills off” the imaginary son, forcing Martha to face reality.
