Who was Tennessee Williams — and why is everything

Who was Tennessee Williams — and why is everything he wrote personal? #theatreliteracy

His mother is Amanda Wingfield. His sister Rose is Laura — and the guilt of her lobotomy haunted him for the rest of his life. His father is the difficult, damaged man who appears in almost every play. Williams said his work was the direct result of his life. He was being precise, not modest. The plays are not about his life. They are transformations of it.

Tennessee Williams. Born Thomas Lanier Williams III on 26 March 1911 in Columbus, Mississippi.

He grew up in his grandfather’s rectory, then in St. Louis, in a house that was cramped and tense. His sister Rose, two years older, was lobotomised in 1943. He wrote toward her for the rest of his life. The name Tennessee came in his twenties and stayed.

Fame came quickly. The Glass Menagerie reached Broadway on 31 March 1945, and he was thirty-four. A Streetcar Named Desire followed in 1947 and won the Pulitzer Prize in 1948. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof won it again in 1955. Elia Kazan directed, Marlon Brando became a star, and Williams became the most produced and most argued-over playwright in America.

Then the long unravelling. Frank Merlo, his partner from 1947, died in 1963. The years after were drink, pills and plays the critics refused. He kept writing. The Two-Character Play belongs to those years.

He died on 25 February 1983 in New York. The plays are still staged worldwide.

Beset by addiction and abandoned by the world, act

Beset by addiction and abandoned by the world, actor-siblings Felice and Clare flee to their childhood home to stage one last play in a desperate bid for normality.

But as the doomed production spirals on and the line between reality and delusion blurs, a past of murder and hate threatens to repeat itself.

Written by Tennessee Williams, The Two Character Play is a tragically beautiful two-hander that explores trauma, addiction, and the fierce struggle of making your life yours. Yet amid the darkness, it is the unrelenting love and care the siblings have for one another that gives the story its glimpses of light and hope.

“My most beautiful play since Streetcar, the very heart of my life.” – Tennessee Williams

In 1945 Tennessee Williams wrote a term into his production notes for The Glass Menagerie that almost nobody uses — and almost every serious theatre production enacts.

Plastic Theatre.

His argument: a play is not a novel performed aloud. It has light. Music. Space. Costume. The actor's body. The silence between the lines. Every one of these is a language. To use only dialogue is to play one instrument and leave the orchestra silent.

Williams wasn't alone in this.

Brecht foregrounded the theatrical artifice. Chekhov wrote sounds into his stage directions — the breaking string, the distant axe — that carry what the characters cannot say. Artaud demanded theatre become a total sensory event. Beckett scored his silences as precisely as his words. Pinter made the pause a weapon.

What Williams added was precision. Not a theory. A practice written into the script itself — the exact specification of which theatrical element, at which moment, would carry which meaning.

The Two-Character Play is where he took it furthest. The external world dissolved. Two actors. A stage. The theatrical elements themselves. Nothing else.

Felice played by Javier Belay. @javierbelay The older brother, the author, the last administrator of a company that no longer exists.

He keeps the production moving because someone must. He writes the pages, sets the terms, watches Clare for the first sign she will not go on. Quick, protective, defensive. His authority is real, and it lasts only as long as the play does.

Felice does not ask whether the audience will come. He asks what happens if the play stops.

Clare. An actress of former standing, now afraid of the stage, the empty theatre and the street outside it.

She is sharp, and she is fragile. Both are accurate. Her fear is not weakness so much as clear sight: she understands the situation before her brother Felice is ready to admit it, and the text takes its pressure from her.

Clare does not step out of the play. She cannot tell where it ends. Played by Madalena Pelouro @pelouromadalena

Two people. One house. No way out that is not also an exit from the play.

In The Two-Character Play, Felice and Clare build a world from what is left to them: an empty theatre, a text, and each other. The company has gone. The audience may or may not arrive. They perform anyway.

The house they play in is a set. The house they live in is a stage. Williams never tells us which is which, and neither do they. “Clare, our home is a theatre anywhere there is one.”-Felice

What is a Two-Hander? Two people. One stage. No c

What is a Two-Hander?

Two people. One stage. No chorus, no relief, nowhere to hide.

A two-hander is exactly what it sounds like — a play written for two performers. No ensemble, no supporting cast, no one to cut to when the central relationship needs a moment to breathe.

This might sound like a limitation.

It is actually a form of extreme precision.

When a playwright strips a play to two people, every word carries more weight. Every silence is louder. Every moment of connection or disconnection between them is visible to the entire audience — with nowhere to hide. The relationship is not a thread running through the play. It is the whole play.

This is why some of the most intense theatrical experiences in history have happened with just two people on a stage.

Waiting for Godot — Beckett, 1953. Two men, a tree, an endless wait. The absence of event was itself the event.

Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf — Albee, 1962. Two people in a marriage that has become a sophisticated instrument of mutual destruction.

And then there is Tennessee Williams — who returned to the two-person play at the end of his life, in one of the most personal and least produced works in his canon.

That play is coming to Barcelona. The Two-Character Play by Tennessee Williams, directed by Kaitlin Kemp @kaitlinkemp . Playing every Wednesday and Thursday at Teatreneu @teatreneubcn this November 2026.

Marlene Tukur is a German-American photographer based in Barcelona. She studied photography at Parsons School of Design and works primarily with film, drawn to its intimacy, imperfection, and quiet sense of memory.

Having spent much of her life moving between places and cultures, she is drawn to spaces where reality begins to feel uncertain—where the everyday takes on something theatrical, and the staged can feel strangely intimate or real.

Growing up with a father who worked as an actor across theatre and film and a mother who worked as an emergency-room nurse, her work has in some ways developed between these two worlds: one rooted in performance and fabrication, the other in immediacy and lived experience.

She is interested in the thin line between what is performed and what is genuine, and in the ambiguity that emerges when the two become difficult to distinguish.
