We've always clapped. But where did this tradition We've always clapped. But where did this tradition actually come from? Ancient Rome, Greek foot-stamping, French professional applauders-for-hire, and standing ovations that have lost all meaning. Applause is a contract. It says: we witnessed this. We were here. What you did mattered.

Theatre is one of the most superstitious professions on earth — and the oldest rule is that saying good luck brings bad luck. The real origin of "break a leg" is more interesting than you think.

There's a job in theatre that almost nobody outsid There's a job in theatre that almost nobody outside theatre has heard of. It's called dramaturgy — and without it, a lot of great productions would fall apart. The audience never sees it. But they feel it.

What is an actor — and what do they actually do? # What is an actor — and what do they actually do? #theatreliteracy

Most people think they know what an actor does. They memorise lines and perform them. But that's only the surface.
An actor's real job is to create a believable human being — with a history, a psychology, a set of desires and fears — and then live as that person, truthfully, in front of a live audience, eight times a week.

They train their body, their voice, and their emotional range the way a musician trains an instrument. They research, they question, they collaborate. And then they let all of that preparation disappear — so that what the audience sees feels not rehearsed, but real.

Why silence in theatre is louder than anything an Why silence in theatre is louder than anything an actor can say #TheatreLiteracy

In film, silence makes you uncomfortable. In theatre, silence is a weapon. When an actor really pauses in front of a live audience, the whole room holds its breath — and the audience fills the silence with their own thoughts. Harold Pinter built an entire theatrical language out of it. The most powerful tool on a stage. And it costs nothing.

What actually is a monologue? Another part of our What actually is a monologue?

Another part of our mini-series on "Theatre Literacy".

A monologue is one person, speaking alone, for an extended period of time. No scene partner. No one to react to. Just you, the words, and an audience. It sounds simple. It is one of the hardest things an actor can do.

Another part of our series "Theatre Literacy".

Next time you watch a play, notice where the actors are standing. It's not random. Every single position on that stage has been planned — and it's called blocking.

You can pause a film. You can re-watch a scene. You can skip to the good bit. Theatre gives you none of that. And that's exactly what makes it extraordinary.

Thank you for your talent and generosity, Mattia S Thank you for your talent and generosity, Mattia Sedda, and for the incredible collaboration with In Other Words, written by Matthew Seager.

Mattia Sedda @mattiasedda_ is an actor, clown, theatre director, and photographer from Sardinia.

Performance has been central to his life from an early age. Mentored by the founder of Prima del Teatro in Italy, he went on to train in London — joining the National Youth Theatre, graduating from East 15 Acting School, and studying at École Philippe Gaulier.

His photography @mattsedda_ph grew out of that same London period, beginning with street work and headshots for fellow actors before becoming a career in its own right. Since 2020, he has worked across headshots, theatre photography, and production imagery for theatre, comedy, and circus. His collaborations include Soho Theatre, the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse at Shakespeare’s Globe, Greenwich Theatre, Jacksons Lane, and multiple Edinburgh Fringe venues, as well as performers such as Natalie Palamides, Julia Masli, and Josh Glanc, and companies including The 7 Fingers and Motionhouse. His work has also extended to festivals including La Mercè and Barcelona Fringe.

As a clown — a direction his teachers suggested with some persistence — Mattia trained with Philippe Gaulier and Spymonkey. His debut solo show, CHOIN, directed by Aitor Basauri, has played sold-out runs at the Museum of Comedy in London and in Italy, and has been presented at Edinburgh Fringe (2024 and 2025), Vault Festival, and Labyrinth Festival. Chortle named it one of the “10 Clowns to See at the 2024 Edinburgh Fringe.”

As a screen actor, he has appeared in Hapless (Amazon Prime, Season 2) and is cast in an upcoming feature film.

"Blue Book Theatre Company was born from the belie "Blue Book Theatre Company was born from the belief that theatre can bridge the local and international communities in Barcelona. With artists from over 25 countries, the company stages professional productions in English. Since its beginnings in the aftermath of the pandemic, the Blue Book Theatre Company has built a presence across Barcelona's stages. "Theatre is a great reason to spend time together," explains the company's co-founder and coordinator Aileen M.Kelly @aileen_marie "Especially if there's a common goal."

Today, the company is one of the few producing professional work of this kind in Barcelona.

"It's a really beautiful way for the international and national community to get together in one space and share a story," Kelly says.

That inclusivity is built into the company's DNA where actors rotate from production to production, with an effort to give opportunities to non-native English speakers as well as emerging and established directors. The company avoids making theatre feel exclusive by working with well-known, published writers and clear narratives. They aim to remove the intimidation that sometimes surrounds the arts. "We try to stay as general as possible in storytelling," Kelly explains, "so everybody can come."
