Marlene Tukur is a German-American photographer ba

Marlene Tukur is a German-American photographer based in Barcelona. She studied photography at Parsons School of Design and works primarily with film, drawn to its intimacy, imperfection, and quiet sense of memory.

Having spent much of her life moving between places and cultures, she is drawn to spaces where reality begins to feel uncertain—where the everyday takes on something theatrical, and the staged can feel strangely intimate or real.

Growing up with a father who worked as an actor across theatre and film and a mother who worked as an emergency-room nurse, her work has in some ways developed between these two worlds: one rooted in performance and fabrication, the other in immediacy and lived experience.

She is interested in the thin line between what is performed and what is genuine, and in the ambiguity that emerges when the two become difficult to distinguish.

Tennessee Williams. Born 1911, Mississippi. The writer behind A Streetcar Named Desire, The Glass Menagerie, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof — the plays that built modern American theatre's idea of what a family can survive.

By the late 1960s he was writing something stranger. The Two-Character Play premiered in London in 1967, revised repeatedly over the following years — restaged in New York as Out Cry in 1973, finalised under its original title in 1975. Two actors, siblings, abandoned by their touring company, performing a play about themselves for an audience that may or may not exist.

Williams called it his most beautiful work since Streetcar. He never stopped revising it.

We open it in November.

Madalena @pelouromadalena is a Portuguese actor working across theatre, film and voice.

She trained at the University for the Creative Arts in London before transferring to the Institute of the Arts Barcelona, completing her final year in collaboration with Liverpool John Moores University.

Her stage work spans the classical and the modern — Hamlet and Agamemnon alongside Blue Stockings, Party Time and A Night Out. She works fluently in Portuguese, English and Spanish.

Javier Belay @javierbelay is an Argentine-born actor and multidisciplinary artist based in Barcelona. He trained at the El Duende Theatre School under Agustín Alezzo, Emiliano Delucchi and Rubén Viani, and later developed his on-camera technique with Lucy Lennox, Marcos Franz and Christian Márquez.

His film credits include Mi Amiga Eva (Cesc Gay), Yo No Soy Esa (María Ripoll), El 47 (Marcel Barrena) and Saben Aquell (David Trueba). He also starred in the short film What If, an official selection at the Lift-Off Global Network Sessions 2026. On television, he has appeared in Yo Adicto (Javier Giner), Élite (Season 8), Mano de Hierro and Dos Tumbas — as well as the international productions Costa!! (Netherlands) and BROS II (Israel).

On stage, Javier has worked across play and musical formats, with credits including Company (Stephen Sondheim), Quizás Hoy (Kander & Ebb), Frida, entre lo absurdo y lo fugaz and ¿Y si fueran tus últimos días?

He is bilingual in English and Spanish — native Argentine and peninsular neutral — speaks Catalan fluently, and trained as a singer and pianist.

Kaitlin @kaitlinkemp is a director and drama educator, a graduate of Queen’s University in Canada. In addition to teaching and directing, she collaborates with theatre makers across Europe to devise original work. She also trained with Frantic Assembly in London in 2022.

Recent directing credits include Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest (2026) and Gurney’s The Dining Room (2024) along with a numerous large scale youth musicals with Spotlight Productions.

Her work reimagines classic and established plays through bold, contemporary staging, making familiar texts feel newly discovered. She is driven by a belief in collective creation, where ideas are developed in the rehearsal room and storytelling emerges through shared exploration. Across her work, she aims to honour text while creating theatre that invites deeper discovery of self, others, and the world in which we live.

Before you see the play, you see the poster.

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec did not design theatre posters because he was asked to. He designed them because the lithograph — the large-format colour print that appeared on the walls of Paris in the 1890s — was a new medium, and he understood it better than anyone. His posters for the Moulin Rouge and the Ambassadeurs did not illustrate the performance. They translated it into a visual language of their own. The poster as an artwork in its own right.

Saul Bass understood the same thing about cinema. His title sequences and film posters — Vertigo, Anatomy of a Murder, The Man with the Golden Arm — reduced a complex narrative to a single graphic idea. A spiralling form. A dismembered arm. A jagged line. The most precise possible reduction of a complex thing to a single image. Bass was not decorating the film. He was making a visual argument about what the film was.

Paula Scher brought the same rigour to institutional identity. Her work for the Public Theater in New York — bold, typographically aggressive, printed in the visual language of 19th century wood type — argued that a public theatre should look like the city it serves. Not polished. Not corporate. Alive.

The best theatre graphic design does not announce the production.

It enacts it.

Design Lead Vera Valeeva for the 2026-2027 season.

Vera is a Barcelona-based graphic designer with an international background and a strong interest in fine and performing arts. She graduated in Graphic Design and Innovation from Elisava Barcelona School of Design and Engineering, after one year of coursing Advertising and Public Relations at the International University of Catalonia (UIC). She also spent a year in New York on an exchange program at Mercy College, studying Graphic Design and Animation.

She currently works in the Marketing Department at El Periódico, which forms part of Prensa Ibérica, where she develops creative projects across print and digital media. Her experience at the newspaper has brought her into close contact with the theatre and entertainment industry, working on projects involving organisations and venues such as Grup Focus, Teatre Grec and Liceu, among others.

With Russian roots, an international education and experience living and studying in Barcelona and New York, Vera is fluent in four languages: Russian, English, Spanish and Catalan. Her artistic interests span theatre, and cinema, as well as graphic design, illustration, branding and visual communication.

She is particularly interested in the way visual language can connect people, ideas and cultures, and in exploring the space where design, communication and the performing arts meet.

British-French, now based in Spain, Jacqueline Slipper began participating in plays at school in France. She went on to read Law in the UK, making theatre throughout her degree. By graduation she had produced more than ten shows, spanning large-scale musicals, modern classics, and original work.

She joins Blue Book Theatre Company for the 2026-27 season.

Thank you for your talent and generosity, Mattia Sedda, and for the incredible collaboration with In Other Words, written by Matthew Seager.

Mattia Sedda @mattiasedda_ is an actor, clown, theatre director, and photographer from Sardinia.

Performance has been central to his life from an early age. Mentored by the founder of Prima del Teatro in Italy, he went on to train in London — joining the National Youth Theatre, graduating from East 15 Acting School, and studying at École Philippe Gaulier.

His photography @mattsedda_ph grew out of that same London period, beginning with street work and headshots for fellow actors before becoming a career in its own right. Since 2020, he has worked across headshots, theatre photography, and production imagery for theatre, comedy, and circus. His collaborations include Soho Theatre, the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse at Shakespeare’s Globe, Greenwich Theatre, Jacksons Lane, and multiple Edinburgh Fringe venues, as well as performers such as Natalie Palamides, Julia Masli, and Josh Glanc, and companies including The 7 Fingers and Motionhouse. His work has also extended to festivals including La Mercè and Barcelona Fringe.

As a clown — a direction his teachers suggested with some persistence — Mattia trained with Philippe Gaulier and Spymonkey. His debut solo show, CHOIN, directed by Aitor Basauri, has played sold-out runs at the Museum of Comedy in London and in Italy, and has been presented at Edinburgh Fringe (2024 and 2025), Vault Festival, and Labyrinth Festival. Chortle named it one of the “10 Clowns to See at the 2024 Edinburgh Fringe.”

As a screen actor, he has appeared in Hapless (Amazon Prime, Season 2) and is cast in an upcoming feature film.
