In the 1950s, playwrights started writing plays th In the 1950s, playwrights started writing plays that made no sense — on purpose. Characters spoke in circles. Nothing resolved. People left confused and somehow moved. This was the Theatre of the Absurd — not just a style but a philosophy. If the world makes no sense, why should a play? The most famous of these plays is Waiting for Godot. More on that next week.

What actually makes a play a classic? #TheatreLite What actually makes a play a classic? #TheatreLiteracy

Not age. Plenty of old things are just old. A classic keeps generating new meaning — you can perform it in different decades, different countries, different contexts and it keeps saying something true. Three things every classic has: a question without a simple answer, characters who feel like real human beings, and language that earns its place.

You've heard the names. Shakespeare. Beckett. Will You've heard the names. Shakespeare. Beckett. Williams. O'Neill. Shaw.
But do you know why their plays are still being performed — and why that matters?

Series II moves from the language of theatre into the canon itself. What makes a play a classic? What did these playwrights understand about being human that keeps their work alive decades, sometimes centuries, later?

This playlist builds deliberately — from the broad question of why the classics survive, through the great American playwrights, through Shaw and the Theatre of the Absurd, and arriving at Beckett. By the end, you’ll know exactly who he is and why everyone keeps talking about him.

Most people think rehearsals are just actors running through their lines over and over. They're not. A rehearsal process is one of the most complex creative journeys in any art form.

Thank you for your talent and generosity, Mattia S Thank you for your talent and generosity, Mattia Sedda, and for the incredible collaboration with In Other Words, written by Matthew Seager.

Mattia Sedda @mattiasedda_ is an actor, clown, theatre director, and photographer from Sardinia.

Performance has been central to his life from an early age. Mentored by the founder of Prima del Teatro in Italy, he went on to train in London — joining the National Youth Theatre, graduating from East 15 Acting School, and studying at École Philippe Gaulier.

His photography @mattsedda_ph grew out of that same London period, beginning with street work and headshots for fellow actors before becoming a career in its own right. Since 2020, he has worked across headshots, theatre photography, and production imagery for theatre, comedy, and circus. His collaborations include Soho Theatre, the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse at Shakespeare’s Globe, Greenwich Theatre, Jacksons Lane, and multiple Edinburgh Fringe venues, as well as performers such as Natalie Palamides, Julia Masli, and Josh Glanc, and companies including The 7 Fingers and Motionhouse. His work has also extended to festivals including La Mercè and Barcelona Fringe.

As a clown — a direction his teachers suggested with some persistence — Mattia trained with Philippe Gaulier and Spymonkey. His debut solo show, CHOIN, directed by Aitor Basauri, has played sold-out runs at the Museum of Comedy in London and in Italy, and has been presented at Edinburgh Fringe (2024 and 2025), Vault Festival, and Labyrinth Festival. Chortle named it one of the “10 Clowns to See at the 2024 Edinburgh Fringe.”

As a screen actor, he has appeared in Hapless (Amazon Prime, Season 2) and is cast in an upcoming feature film.

"Blue Book Theatre Company was born from the belie "Blue Book Theatre Company was born from the belief that theatre can bridge the local and international communities in Barcelona. With artists from over 25 countries, the company stages professional productions in English. Since its beginnings in the aftermath of the pandemic, the Blue Book Theatre Company has built a presence across Barcelona's stages. "Theatre is a great reason to spend time together," explains the company's co-founder and coordinator Aileen M.Kelly @aileen_marie "Especially if there's a common goal."

Today, the company is one of the few producing professional work of this kind in Barcelona.

"It's a really beautiful way for the international and national community to get together in one space and share a story," Kelly says.

That inclusivity is built into the company's DNA where actors rotate from production to production, with an effort to give opportunities to non-native English speakers as well as emerging and established directors. The company avoids making theatre feel exclusive by working with well-known, published writers and clear narratives. They aim to remove the intimidation that sometimes surrounds the arts. "We try to stay as general as possible in storytelling," Kelly explains, "so everybody can come."

“The play uses flashbacks, reflections, and direct audience address in a non-linear structure that itself mirrors the mind of an Alzheimer’s patient. This is a particularly intelligent dramaturgical choice — the form enacts the theme. The audience doesn’t just observe a failing mind; they experience something of its disorientation firsthand.” -British Theatre Guide

“Seager describes hoping audiences can leave with a smile on their face and tears in their eyes — and that being in love and wanting to care for those close to us is something universal we can all connect to. That balance — joy and grief held simultaneously — is perhaps the most defining quality of the piece, and why it has now reached over 300,000 people across four continents.” First Night Magazine
