In 1945 Tennessee Williams wrote a term into his production notes for The Glass Menagerie that almost nobody uses — and almost every serious theatre production enacts.

Plastic Theatre.

His argument: a play is not a novel performed aloud. It has light. Music. Space. Costume. The actor's body. The silence between the lines. Every one of these is a language. To use only dialogue is to play one instrument and leave the orchestra silent.

Williams wasn't alone in this.

Brecht foregrounded the theatrical artifice. Chekhov wrote sounds into his stage directions — the breaking string, the distant axe — that carry what the characters cannot say. Artaud demanded theatre become a total sensory event. Beckett scored his silences as precisely as his words. Pinter made the pause a weapon.

What Williams added was precision. Not a theory. A practice written into the script itself — the exact specification of which theatrical element, at which moment, would carry which meaning.

The Two-Character Play is where he took it furthest. The external world dissolved. Two actors. A stage. The theatrical elements themselves. Nothing else.

He keeps the production moving because someone must. He writes the pages, sets the terms, watches Clare for the first sign she will not go on. Quick, protective, defensive. His authority is real, and it lasts only as long as the play does.

Felice does not ask whether the audience will come. He asks what happens if the play stops.

She is sharp, and she is fragile. Both are accurate. Her fear is not weakness so much as clear sight: she understands the situation before her brother Felice is ready to admit it, and the text takes its pressure from her.

Two people. One house. No way out that is not also an exit from the play.

In The Two-Character Play, Felice and Clare build a world from what is left to them: an empty theatre, a text, and each other. The company has gone. The audience may or may not arrive. They perform anyway.

The house they play in is a set. The house they live in is a stage. Williams never tells us which is which, and neither do they. “Clare, our home is a theatre anywhere there is one.”-Felice

Siblings. Actors. Authors of the room they cannot leave.

What is a Two-Hander?

Two people. One stage. No chorus, no relief, nowhere to hide.

A two-hander is exactly what it sounds like — a play written for two performers. No ensemble, no supporting cast, no one to cut to when the central relationship needs a moment to breathe.

This might sound like a limitation.

It is actually a form of extreme precision.

When a playwright strips a play to two people, every word carries more weight. Every silence is louder. Every moment of connection or disconnection between them is visible to the entire audience — with nowhere to hide. The relationship is not a thread running through the play. It is the whole play.

This is why some of the most intense theatrical experiences in history have happened with just two people on a stage.

Waiting for Godot — Beckett, 1953. Two men, a tree, an endless wait. The absence of event was itself the event.

Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf — Albee, 1962. Two people in a marriage that has become a sophisticated instrument of mutual destruction.

And then there is Tennessee Williams — who returned to the two-person play at the end of his life, in one of the most personal and least produced works in his canon.

Grateful to participate in the Erasmus plus program here in the city @erasmus_barcelona & @erasmus_plus_projects welcoming Alessandro this year as part of our team.

Alessandro Palumbo is an Italian actor, in Barcelona through the Erasmus programme for his first professional stage work. @_palu333_

He has trained for over five years in a theatre programme in Como. He has also spent three years at Milan's Scuola del Teatro Musicale, working chiefly in singing and dance, with further grounding in directing, production, costume design, and film set practice.

Marlene Tukur is a German-American photographer based in Barcelona. She studied photography at Parsons School of Design and works primarily with film, drawn to its intimacy, imperfection, and quiet sense of memory.

Having spent much of her life moving between places and cultures, she is drawn to spaces where reality begins to feel uncertain—where the everyday takes on something theatrical, and the staged can feel strangely intimate or real.

Growing up with a father who worked as an actor across theatre and film and a mother who worked as an emergency-room nurse, her work has in some ways developed between these two worlds: one rooted in performance and fabrication, the other in immediacy and lived experience.

She is interested in the thin line between what is performed and what is genuine, and in the ambiguity that emerges when the two become difficult to distinguish.

Madalena @pelouromadalena is a Portuguese actor working across theatre, film and voice.

She trained at the University for the Creative Arts in London before transferring to the Institute of the Arts Barcelona, completing her final year in collaboration with Liverpool John Moores University.

Her stage work spans the classical and the modern — Hamlet and Agamemnon alongside Blue Stockings, Party Time and A Night Out. She works fluently in Portuguese, English and Spanish.

Javier Belay @javierbelay is an Argentine-born actor and multidisciplinary artist based in Barcelona. He trained at the El Duende Theatre School under Agustín Alezzo, Emiliano Delucchi and Rubén Viani, and later developed his on-camera technique with Lucy Lennox, Marcos Franz and Christian Márquez.

His film credits include Mi Amiga Eva (Cesc Gay), Yo No Soy Esa (María Ripoll), El 47 (Marcel Barrena) and Saben Aquell (David Trueba). He also starred in the short film What If, an official selection at the Lift-Off Global Network Sessions 2026. On television, he has appeared in Yo Adicto (Javier Giner), Élite (Season 8), Mano de Hierro and Dos Tumbas — as well as the international productions Costa!! (Netherlands) and BROS II (Israel).

On stage, Javier has worked across play and musical formats, with credits including Company (Stephen Sondheim), Quizás Hoy (Kander & Ebb), Frida, entre lo absurdo y lo fugaz and ¿Y si fueran tus últimos días?

He is bilingual in English and Spanish — native Argentine and peninsular neutral — speaks Catalan fluently, and trained as a singer and pianist.

Kaitlin @kaitlinkemp is a director and drama educator, a graduate of Queen’s University in Canada. In addition to teaching and directing, she collaborates with theatre makers across Europe to devise original work. She also trained with Frantic Assembly in London in 2022.

Recent directing credits include Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest (2026) and Gurney’s The Dining Room (2024) along with a numerous large scale youth musicals with Spotlight Productions.

Her work reimagines classic and established plays through bold, contemporary staging, making familiar texts feel newly discovered. She is driven by a belief in collective creation, where ideas are developed in the rehearsal room and storytelling emerges through shared exploration. Across her work, she aims to honour text while creating theatre that invites deeper discovery of self, others, and the world in which we live.

Before you see the play, you see the poster.

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec did not design theatre posters because he was asked to. He designed them because the lithograph — the large-format colour print that appeared on the walls of Paris in the 1890s — was a new medium, and he understood it better than anyone. His posters for the Moulin Rouge and the Ambassadeurs did not illustrate the performance. They translated it into a visual language of their own. The poster as an artwork in its own right.

Saul Bass understood the same thing about cinema. His title sequences and film posters — Vertigo, Anatomy of a Murder, The Man with the Golden Arm — reduced a complex narrative to a single graphic idea. A spiralling form. A dismembered arm. A jagged line. The most precise possible reduction of a complex thing to a single image. Bass was not decorating the film. He was making a visual argument about what the film was.

Paula Scher brought the same rigour to institutional identity. Her work for the Public Theater in New York — bold, typographically aggressive, printed in the visual language of 19th century wood type — argued that a public theatre should look like the city it serves. Not polished. Not corporate. Alive.

The best theatre graphic design does not announce the production.

It enacts it.

Design Lead Vera Valeeva for the 2026-2027 season.

Vera is a Barcelona-based graphic designer with an international background and a strong interest in fine and performing arts. She graduated in Graphic Design and Innovation from Elisava Barcelona School of Design and Engineering, after one year of coursing Advertising and Public Relations at the International University of Catalonia (UIC). She also spent a year in New York on an exchange program at Mercy College, studying Graphic Design and Animation.

She currently works in the Marketing Department at El Periódico, which forms part of Prensa Ibérica, where she develops creative projects across print and digital media. Her experience at the newspaper has brought her into close contact with the theatre and entertainment industry, working on projects involving organisations and venues such as Grup Focus, Teatre Grec and Liceu, among others.

With Russian roots, an international education and experience living and studying in Barcelona and New York, Vera is fluent in four languages: Russian, English, Spanish and Catalan. Her artistic interests span theatre, and cinema, as well as graphic design, illustration, branding and visual communication.

She is particularly interested in the way visual language can connect people, ideas and cultures, and in exploring the space where design, communication and the performing arts meet.

Jackie Slipper, producer.

British-French, now based in Spain, Jacqueline Slipper began participating in plays at school in France. She went on to read Law in the UK, making theatre throughout her degree. By graduation she had produced more than ten shows, spanning large-scale musicals, modern classics, and original work.

She joins Blue Book Theatre Company for the 2026-27 season.
