Our Town

Thornton Wilder’s Our Town opens with a bare stage and a man who introduces himself as the Stage Manager. No scenery. No curtain. Props are mimed. He tells the audience where they are, what year it is, and something of what is to come.

What follows is twelve years in the life of two neighbouring families in a small New Hampshire town — the Gibbs and the Webbs. Breakfast made, school attended, a wedding, the particular texture of days that seem unremarkable until they are not.

Wilder wrote the play in 1938. It won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama that year and has not left the stage since. It is formally strange, quietly radical, and much harder to shake than it first appears.
